A Doctoral Dissertation at the College of Education for Human Sciences Discusses “Multiplicity of Attributes for a Single Referent in the Holy Qur’an: A Study in Semantic Fields”

A doctoral dissertation was discussed at the College of Education for Human Sciences, Department of Arabic Language, on Monday, 5 January 2026, submitted by the doctoral candidate Ihab Iyad Hussein Al-Douri, entitled “Multiplicity of Attributes for a Single Referent in the Holy Qur’an: A Study in Semantic Fields.”

The study aims to collect and analyze the various attributes that are ascribed to a single referent in the Holy Qur’an across multiple contexts rather than within a single context. The research organizes these attributes into analytical tables according to semantic field criteria, highlighting the significance of their semantic implications in the interpretation of the words of Almighty Allah. The study also seeks to complement the efforts of earlier scholars and enrich the topic with new scholarly insights.
An illustrative example examined in the study is the referent “punishment” (ʿadhāb), which appears in the Qur’an with multiple attributes, such as “painful punishment,” “severe punishment,” and “humiliating punishment.”

The dissertation defense committee consisted of the following faculty members:
