M.A. Thesis at the College of Education for Humanities Discusses “Al-Mukhtar fi Manaqib al-Akhyar by Ibn al-Athir Abu al-Saʿadat (d. 606 AH/1210 CE): A Study in Methodology and Sources”

The Department of History at the College of Education for Humanities, Tikrit University, held on Sunday (September 28, 2025) the defense of the M.A. thesis submitted by Ismail Naif Ismail, entitled “Al-Mukhtar fi Manaqib al-Akhyar by Ibn al-Athir Abu al-Saʿadat (d. 606 AH/1210 CE): A Study in Methodology and Sources.”

The thesis aimed to examine the life of Abu al-Saʿadat Majd al-Din Ibn al-Athir, highlighting his scholarly and intellectual contributions, as well as analyzing his methodology and sources as reflected in his work Al-Mukhtar fi Manaqib al-Akhyar.

The study reached the following conclusions:

  1. It provided an in-depth introduction to the personality of Majd al-Din Ibn al-Athir.
  2. It demonstrated that he benefited from a wide range of sources available to him, particularly through his connection with the Zengid state and his work in the Dīwān al-Inshāʾ (bureau of correspondence).
  3. It showed his strong emphasis on the Qur’anic verses in his writings.
