M.A. Thesis at the College of Education for Humanities Discusses: “The Bodily Resurrection in the Three Religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam – A Comparative Study”

Today, Tuesday (23/9/2025), the Department of Qur’anic Sciences and Islamic Education at the College of Education for Humanities, Tikrit University, held the defense of the M.A. thesis submitted by the student Abdulqader Ibrahim Mahmoud, entitled: “The Bodily Resurrection in the Three Religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam – A Comparative Study.”

The study was launched from a central question: To what extent is the concept of bodily resurrection present in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam? And what are the similarities and differences in the perceptions of these religions regarding this belief?

To address this question, the research traced the textual and intellectual foundations of the doctrine in each religion, referring to the sacred scriptures — the Torah, the Bible, and the Holy Qur’an — as well as the interpretations of exegetes and the views of theologians, philosophers, and scholastic thinkers.

The study reached the following conclusions:

  1. Bodily resurrection is strongly and explicitly affirmed in Islam, in a literal sense that cannot be reduced to symbolic interpretation.
  2. In Judaism and Christianity, the concept of resurrection varies between explicit and metaphorical texts. However, the Christian perspective presents a clearer affirmation of bodily resurrection than Judaism, given the presence of explicit New Testament passages affirming it.
  3. Philosophical influences played a significant role in shaping understandings of this doctrine, particularly in medieval Jewish and Christian thought.

The examining committee consisted of:
