A PhD dissertation was defended at the College of Education for Humanities, Department of English, at University of Tikrit on Tuesday (March 17, 2026), by the student Safaa Salih Mahdi.
The dissertation, titled “ARCS and KEMP Models on EFL University Students' Outline Writing and Self-Regulation,” aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the ARCS model (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction), alongside the KEMP instructional design model, in improving Iraqi EFL university students’ performance in outline writing, as well as enhancing their self-regulated learning strategies.
The study is grounded in motivation and instructional design theories and adopted an experimental approach involving three groups: two experimental groups taught وفق the ARCS and KEMP models respectively, and a control group taught using conventional methods. The sample consisted of 108 third-year students from the Department of English at University of Tikrit for the academic year 2024–2025 (32 students in each group), in addition to 12 students who participated in the pilot study.
To collect data, the researcher employed a pre–post test to measure outline writing skills and a questionnaire to assess self-regulated learning, supported by an analytical rubric and a Likert scale. Statistical tools such as the t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used to examine differences in students’ performance and determine the relationship between self-regulated learning and achievement in outline writing.
