On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the doctoral dissertation of graduate student Imran Hadi Abbas Al-Hamdani was defended at the Department of Arabic Language, College of Education for Humanities. The dissertation is titled:
“The Unique Linguistic Poetic Evidence Cited by Yaqut al-Hamawi (d. 626 AH) in His Work Muʿjam.”
The choice of poetry as a scientific subject in Arabic language research conceals profound linguistic and literary insights. The richness of language embodied in Arabic poetry makes it a fundamental source for scholars seeking to uncover its unique features—especially in terms of rare meanings and stylistic intricacies. The importance of poetic citations lies in their precise construction, eloquent rhythm, refined diction, and deep semantic content. For this reason, poets have long been considered the masters of expression.
Yaqut al-Hamawi, in his monumental work Muʿjam al-Buldān (The Geographical Dictionary), demonstrated not only his mastery of geography but also his depth as a linguist, grammarian, and literary scholar. His compilation stands as a major literary and scientific repository, preserving an extensive legacy of Arabic knowledge and culture.
